About the Department of Psychology

Akdeniz University Faculty of Letters, Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology started education with thirty-five undergraduate students in the Faculty of Letters of Akdeniz University in the 2014-2015 academic year, and had its first graduates in the 2017-2018 academic year. Today, there are more than four hundred students enrolled in the undergraduate program. Our department consists of five sub-departments: Experimental Psychology, Applied Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Social Psychology. Akdeniz University Psychology Department has a minor degree agreement with Departments of Philosophy and Sociology.

As of the 2019-2020 academic year, the Department of Psychology has started Master's program focusing on the topics of Forensic Psychology and Neurobiopsychology.

The Psychology undergraduate degree program is prepared on the basis of the standards recommended by the Turkish Psychological Association (TPD) for psychology undergraduate programs, including courses on the basic theories and fields of psychology in the first two years and theoretical and applied courses in the practice-oriented fields of psychology in the third and fourth years.

The aim of the Department of Psychology is to train professionals who will work in different sub-fields of psychology, who are loyal to professional ethics, and who have the knowledge of fundamental theories and methodology in psychology. Graduates work in various fields of psychology and/or in interdisciplinary fields with different branches of science. Working areas of Psychology graduates: clinics serving in the field of mental health and physical diseases, preschool institutions, institutions affiliated to the Ministry of National Education (schools and guidance research centers), special education centers, institutions affiliated to the Ministry of Justice, human resources units of companies, and psychotechnical evaluation units. In addition, it is possible for students to continue their graduate education in various different sub-fields of psychology. Department of Psychology plans to establish Ph.D. programs in the upcoming years.

Akdeniz University Psychology Department has international student exchange agreement with Ruhr University Bochum in Germany and University of L'aquila Psychology Departments in Italy within the scope of Erasmus+ Program. In addition, within the scope of the Mevlana Program, our students will have the right to take courses from these universities within the scope of agreements with the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Psychology Departments of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in Georgia.
